At six-foot-one, Joel Davies stood a good six inches taller than Yvonne. He had agreed to come to the station rather than see police in his room in the hall of residence.

Dressed in jeans and a shirt, his short-cropped hair appeared to have had a trim recently. He yawned, taking a seat and rubbing the bags under his eyes.

“Thank you, for coming in, Joel. I’m Yvonne Giles.”

“Is there any news?” he asked, his eyes scanning her face.

She shook her head. “Not yet, I’m afraid. I’m so sorry for your loss, Joel. We want to prevent this happening to anyone else, so I will gratefully receive any information you can give me today.”

He nodded. “I will do anything to help you catch my girlfriend’s killer. If I get my hands on him, I’ll-”

She held up her hand. “I understand you’re hurting, but please trust us to get justice for you. Don't take matters into your own hands.”

He shrugged. “I just want him caught.”

“I know.” She cleared her throat. “I must warn you, some things I ask will concern private matters and may touch on sensitive subjects. Are you ready for that?”

“Yes.”

“Joel, were you with Amanda during the night before she was murdered?”

“Yes, she stayed in my room with me.”

“What time did she leave you?”

“Just after five. She was an early riser and liked to go for early morning runs. I’m not a morning person. It was one of the few things we didn’t see eye-to-eye on.”

“How was she, before she left?”

“Energetic.” His mouth twitched in a half smile. “She was ready to go. I was still in bed and wanting to go back to sleep.”

“And did you?”

“What? Go back to sleep? Yes, yes, I did. I wish I’d gone with her but it would have been the first time. I’m not a jogger. I like team sports. I play rugby as a fly-half. I’ve never understood the appeal of running for running’s sake, but I wish I had gone with her that morning.”

“I know… Can I ask, were you intimate that night?”

He frowned, thinking for a moment. “No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, why?”

“When you were intimate, did you use protection?”

“Amanda was on the pill. That was all the protection we needed. We were solid. I had been thinking of asking her to marry me. We didn’t sleep around and we didn’t use any other protection.”

“Not condoms?”

“No.” His eyes narrowed. “Why? Did someone have sex with her using a condom? Did her killer-”

“I don’t know.” Yvonne said, truthfully. “Traces of spermicide were present and we have a suspicion the killer may have been responsible. I would ask you not to repeat that, for the time being, it could jeopardise the case.”

“I understand. I won’t say anything. I can’t bear the thought of her going through that on top of everything else.”

“If it helps, she may not have known much about it.”

“I see.” He put his head in his hands.

“Are you having counselling for your grief, Joel?”

He shook his head. “No. You’re not the first person to suggest it.
